So here are the details: 2007 Infiniti G35 Journey. It has 91,000 miles, clean title. Black exterior, white interior. VQ35HR engine 306 bhp @6800 RPM and 268 lb-ft torque @4800 RPM. Rear wheel drive on performance tires.
It’s quite a leap from the Accord. Throttle is way more sensitive in the Infiniti, partly due to the fact that it has two throttle bodies. A buddy of mine pointed me in the direction of a Weapon-R cold air intake listed at a decent price. I don’t think I’m going to start tinkering with it right away, I want to get a sense of how it drives and what it needs in terms of maintenance.
It drives crisp. Steering is tight and it turns on a dime. Throttle is punchy and the brakes are fantastic, though I think I’ll install Bosch Quietcast rotors and ceramic pads eventually. It’s nice working at an auto parts store, I get heavy discounts on car parts.
Inside is nice. Though there is a bit of fade on the steering wheel, the upholstery is in perfect shape. Beautiful white leather seats. It has a center LCD display with navigation. It isn’t too difficult to set up which I like. I still need to learn how to use the infotainment system, but it isn’t bad at all. It also has AV inputs for some reason.
I was playing around with the system while in my school’s parking lot. I can set it to lift the steering wheel and move the seat back when I open the door, making it easier to get in and out. I really like that.

During my hiatus, there were a few cars I was interested in. One was a 2001 Lexus GS430 which wasn’t good at all. It had all sorts of electrical problems and it was modified by someone with a substance abuse problem. Another was a 2003 Acura 3.2 CL Type-S. This was one of the rare ones fitted with the 6 speed manual transmission. It had a few blemishes here and there, but it looked good and it was listed at a seriously good price. Unfortunately it was sold quickly and I never got a chance to see it in person or drive it. Besides those two, most of the cars I was interested in, on craigslist, were either in poor shape, or had a salvaged/rebuilt title. No thanks.
Then I decided that franchise dealerships had good cars, so I went to a reputable dealership in Bellevue we’ve had good experiences with. We also know one of the salesmen there which was good. I first looked at a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. It was black on black and it had a manual transmission. That thing was a tank. The flywheel felt robust, it barely lost any RPMs as I was changing gears. It was fitted with the TRD exhaust and a poorly-placed cold air intake. It sounded mean. I loved it. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a good price on that and it was sold shortly after I left. I then decided to be sensible and look at a Corolla. Yes, a 2015 Toyota Corolla S.
I almost settled on the Corolla. I test drove one the day before. It was actually a nice car. Steering was nimble, throttle was responsive. It felt spacious inside. The interior wasn’t a bad place to be. They said they could get me a good deal on one of those. The morning of the purchase, I asked the salesman about the Infiniti G35 they had. I drove that, and it was clear that it was going to be my car. We pulled back into the dealership and began the paperwork right there.

The moral of the story: it sucks being a car enthusiast: we know too well what’s a good car and what’s a bad car, and we’re picky little motherfuckers.
“No, I don’t want a 2004 Acura TL 5AT because that’s the bad transmission.”
“No, I don’t want a Nissan/Infiniti with the VQ35DE because those things eat a quart of oil every 1000 miles.”
“No, I don’t want a Toyota Corolla because those are boring.” (they’re not) “Also the Corolla I don’t want better have alloy wheels.”

I don’t think I’ll be very active on Oppo. I’ll probably drop in every now and then.

My wife has a G37x with the VQ37VHR. To me it could use more torque but that could be a “me” issue. I do love the steering. It’s possibly the best thing about that car.

Nice choice! These are great. I worked at Infiniti once upon a time and these were always pretty reliable, and I thought they were great to drive. Underrated in my opinion.
Don’t waste your money on an intake. They cause rough idles and CEL’s more often than not on these engines.
